Dosinia elegans

The Disk and Elegant Dosinias are members of the Venus Family. They are very similar but can be differentiated because the Disk Dosinia has finer concentric ridges that cannot be counted with the naked eye. The Elegant Dosinia ridges are broad and easily seen and counted.

These bivalves live in sand and sandy mud, preferring shallow water up to 10 feet deep. They favor protected beaches and bays. They live buried in the sea floor, feeding by pulling sea water in and out through siphons.

Live shells should never be taken from any Florida State Park.
